Dental Emergency Situations
It’s important to be able to identify a dental emergency so that in the case of an event, you can determine an appropriate course of action. Some dental conditions may require immediate attention, while others can wait for an appointment.
You may be experiencing a dental emergency if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Continuous bleeding in the mouth
- Trauma to the teeth, gums, or mouth
- Severe tooth pain
- Fractured, chipped, or cracked teeth
- Knocked out tooth
- Damage to restoration procedures such as a bridge
- Oral infections
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, give us a call at (954) 251-0804. A knowledgeable member of our staff will provide you with the necessary information to assist you in moving forward when the time is right.
What You Can Do to Help
Whether you are experiencing a dental emergency or waiting for an appointment, there are a few things you can do to prevent further damage and preserve your oral health.
- If you’re experiencing a toothache, clean the area with lukewarm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever and apply a cold compress to relieve any swelling or discomfort.
- If you have a fractured, chipped, or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and come in for emergency care as soon as possible to avoid additional damage.
- If your tooth has been knocked out, gently clean your tooth and bring it to your appointment so Dr. Cortes can try to reattach it. Avoid touching the root area, instead handle the tooth by the crown. Store the tooth in a container with milk or your own saliva to preserve the tooth until you can come in.
- If you’ve cut a part of your mouth or lip, apply firm pressure to the area with a gauze or sanitized cloth to stop the bleeding. You may also apply an ice pack to relieve any pain or discomfort.
These guidelines will help to manage your dental emergency until you’re able to come in for your emergency care. If pain or bleeding doesn’t subside, call us immediately at (954) 251-0804, and we’ll see you as soon as possible.
